Letter from the CEO of an advertising agency in KZN
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and sincere thanks for the highly effective and very interesting ‘Stress
Management’ talk you gave to our staff.
As you know, previous talks given by so-called professionals on the subject of handling stress have proved unsuccessful both in terms of
the speaker ‘connecting’ with our staff on any level and in the content of the talk proving to be too academic, so that the message went ‘over the heads’ of most people.
Your fascinating 2-hour talk, by comparison, totally captured the attention of everyone in the room and yet was also very easy to
comprehend.
I particularly commend you for the large number of examples of simple yet effective coping mechanisms you illustrated to help relieve
stress and tension. Interestingly enough, many of our staff have already put some of these exercises into practice, and I am delighted to report that ‘deep breathing’, muscle relaxation and 5 minute stress relief
breaks are becoming an essential part of our office repertoire.
The feedback I received from our staff, after your talk, was complimentary and very positive. I can say with complete honesty that every
person who made an effort to attend your talk has benefited from it in some way.
Those individuals who suffer from stress made manifest in ‘crying jags’ and tense irritability came to me afterwards to say that they were
astonished to discover that ‘anger’ is the primary reason for stress. I believe that by ‘holding up a mirror’, you have given these individuals a totally new perspective in terms of understanding their emotional
makeup and learning how to deal with anger, without resorting to tears or to ‘biting heads off’.
Naturally I know that we cannot change the world in a day, but I also know that regular baby steps taken in the right direction can
achieve significant change and I believe that your talk on Stress Management has had a real and lasting impact on our staff.
You have a wonderful ability to get through to people with a presentation manner that is entirely credible and professional, yet warm,
humorous and sympathetic.
As corporate South Africa learns to adapt to a changing environment in order to survive, I believe stress levels are doomed to escalate in
offices country-wide.
It’s people like you who can help us respond to change in a way that is positive and life-affirming, who will play a very real role in our future.
